About us
The 26 member institutes of the Fraunhofer Battery Alliance develop technical and conceptual solutions along the entire value chain of electrochemical energy storage systems up to the application level either on behalf of customers or in public funded projects together with industry. Our expertise and many years of experience range from material research and cell production to systems and integration as well as end-of-life and recycling. These topics are supplemented by simulation, digitalization and extensive testing and evaluation.
Together with our affiliate, Fraunhofer USA Inc., we create a vital bridge between two of the world’s leading innovative ecosystems. This collaboration goes far beyond traditional institutional partnerships – it represents a strategic alliance that accelerates technological advancement and creates lasting positive impact for both continents.

Applied R&D and Collaboration
Our applied research work focuses on lithium-based battery technologies – established or next-generation – such as lithium-ion, lithium-sulfur and solid-state batteries. In addition, sodium-based batteries such as sodium-ion and sodium high-temperature batteries, as well as redox-flow and metal-air batteries, are under research. The aim is to transfer scientific findings to industry and thus to the market.
For industrial customers, the extensive research infrastructure and cross-institute pooling of expertise offers numerous points of contact along the circular battery value chain, from materials and cell production through to battery systems and battery recycling, including overarching activities such as battery testing, simulations, digitalization and techno-economic assessments. The holistic approach, coupled with our applied battery research, bridges the divide between scientific findings and their practical application in industry.
